When I had to shift the center of gravity of my life...(feat. Arthur Schopenhauer)
....even after we get what we want, we’re not quite satisfied....
There’s always another thing.
Another goal.
Another craving....
And that quiet thought —
“Then I’ll be happy.”
Lately, I’ve been sitting with the writings of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, who believed that all human suffering comes from this endless wanting.
He called it the “Will” —
a restless, hungry energy inside us that never truly rests.
But he also said something beautiful: In rare moments — when we lose ourselves in art, music, or nature — we become free from that desire.
We just are.
We become pure awareness.
Whole.
Complete.
Enough.
This is also what mindfulness teaches us:
To see our wanting without clinging to it.
To soften our grip.
To notice the pause between desires.
To choose love instead of fear.
To return to presence, again and again.
